The Power of Nightmares: After watching this documentary, I was a bit shocked…. What??? Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda and threaten from international terrorist towards western country is just a “one big lie”, and it was played very well by media. He…. He….he what was revealed by Adam Curtis is exactly the same from what I thought and believed. So from what I just studied in class, the name is- Media Imperialism. Definition from the lecture notes…. The idea that powerful and wealthy countries can exercise economic, cultural and social control over others through control of media industries.
So from the documentary, the powerful country like America has the ability to brainwash and set new mind and belief to be followed by smaller countries by using the control of media. They used media to widespread fear among people about dangerous effects causes of terrorist network called Al-Qaeda, who was headed by Osama Bin Laden. After of tragedy of 9/11 media was provoked that a greater “9/11” would happen next if they don’t start a campaign “War of Terrorism”. The panic and fear among people had given politician more power and authority for them to do their secret agendas. And these darkness and nightmares of fear give and turn them to become more powerful. As a result “the whole world” has no power to argue on whatever action that they’re taking (although it clearly wrong) like the invasion on Afghanistan, invasion on Iraq, arresting people without prosecution at Guantanamo Bay and many more.
Why does this situation happend? ….. It is because America has control of world’s powerful media like CNN, BBC, Reuter and etc. So they can decide what news we should know and what should not. Besides that, during the war on Iraq, media agencies only can get real situation from ministry of US defense. All the American thought about fighting against terrorist be will printed out and given to media agencies as their source of news, so it can produce bias information for what we call it –Media Imperialism.
“The problem with just one company or owner controlling the media is that media output can be biased. The owner can decide on what information is shown, as well as what to censor”……………………… lecture note(media Imperialism).
My Personal Reflection:
Toady not many students came to class, maybe busy with their final ‘Design Fundamental’ submission. But as few weeks ago we have going to face exam, so we must submit assignment 2 next week. Again Mr Radzi mentioned about importance of doing this assignment.
“Tedrad of Media” was created by McLuhan and can be used to measured our society from effect of media application/technology. The effects can separate into four main categories –Enhances, Reverses, Retrieves and Obsolesces. And all media can be test and apply by putting it at center of diagram (as medium) and answer it with :
• What does the medium enhance?
• What does the medium make obsolete?
• What does the medium retrieve that had been obsolesced earlier?
• What does the medium flip into when pushed to extremes?
*Taken from wikipedia
And to look at our culture, I have chosen one of nowadays powerful communication, Its an electronic mail aka. famously know as E-mail.
1. What does the medium enhance?
Words, news, graphic, picture
2. What does the medium make obsolete?
Because of the invention of e-mail, it makes typical letters are obsolete. Besides that it also made stone letter (batu bersurat) and cave paintings unnecessary.
3. What does the medium retrieve that had been obsolesced earlier?
E-mail makes massages or news via text became popular. Culture of sending greeting cards during festival season can became popular again.
4. What does when pushed to extremes?
The over extended of e-mail makes user’s eyes become dry and red because of exposure long hours in front of screen computer.
My Personal Refection:
Today we study about Marshall Mcluhan and his great theory towards media. Who is he?? So based on my short finding from lecture note and internet he is one of the famous media and communication theorists and critics. One of his famous works is Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man. His theory suggests that media has become an extension of the human mind and body.

1) What kind of culture influences through technology can you see from today’s world?
2) Is there a possibility to reshape the (new) culture today via new technology, How?
1) For starters, technology had become ever sophisticated that we no longer
have to physically be together to socialize. And because of that alone, our
culture has changed in the line of technology mostly because it has the
biggest influence on the way we socialize. For instance, we greet people
using long distances communication as "where are you?" instead of the
typical "how are you?".
2)Yes there is a possibility of reshaping the culture today via new
technology since technology offeres us new and innovative ways of
communcating every so often that it's hard to keep up with the latest gig of
new communication technology. Every now and then we are introduced to
new ways of communicating and who knows what else is coming in the future
of technology that is reshaping our new culture to an even more advanced
culture.
My Personal Reflection:
Today is the last class for the semester and I would like to thank Mr. Radzi and Ms. Helena for their contribution to the students including myself and I would like to express my gratitude. Thank you for the knowledge of media culture and it would not be the end for me to learn just by the end of the class.
Please bless me in my coming exam
THANK YOU SO MUCH

Obscenity, pornography and indecency: What are the differences between these terms?
Saturday, March 21, 2009
From Wikipidea :”Media Literacy is the process of accessing, analyzing, evaluating and creating messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres and forms. It uses an inquiry-based instructional model that encourages people to ask questions about what they watch, see, and read.”
So based from that what I think, Media Literacy is a process of someone receiving message, then understanding and digesting it and from the essence of that message he tries to produce something new. The basic word is creating something new from what he have study. (I’m sorry if I’m wrong).
Media literacy is important for FCM Students in order to produce a good artwork, because from that he must use his critical thinking. In real task as FCM students, before he starts making an artwork he must receive multiple information by study and do some research. Then he analyzes the information he had to find the helpful information. Then evaluate that important information to make it suitable with what has required. After that process the good artwork with accurate request to the guideline of the artwork would be produce. In other words, the importance of media literacy really helps guide students to make something new in accordance to the proper steps of making proper artworks.
My Personal Reflection:
For overall, I could summarize our topic lecture this week can be divided to two main topics Cultural Stereotype and Media Representation (for media representation can be depict and measure by Hegemonic and pluralistic model).
From these two topics I would like to describe the effect of stereotype upon certain community or group. For me stereotype is dangerous because it labeling same group with overall perception. Like example tragedy 9/11 make people aware and assume Arabs is terrorist and vary fanatic fundamentalist. Is true that in fact a few Arabs were extreme and become terrorist in away to fight with ‘penjajah’ (like Taliban in Afghanistan. But stereotype with help of powerful media was cruel by ‘branding’ Arabs as terrorist, as a result Arabs people were look with suspicious and prejudice in what ever they are doing. I think media stereotype is powerful to change people mindset.
Thank You
Happy Holiday to my lectures and friends..
My Personal Reflection
Hi I’m one of your students that had seen you after MLC class regarding me not really understand about ‘personal think’ (as we were asked to post it in our blogs). After seeing you, you suggested to post back ‘personal think’ inside my blog. Now ,just did what you asked to do and I hope you can .
Personal reflection
Week 1
My first class of MLC. My lecture’s Name is Mr. Radzi bedu, and he was helped by Miss Helena. Our class was held at FCM building and it started at 9.00 am until 11.00 am. In my calculation maybe around 60 students fitted in FA class. I think it was a normal amount for lecture section, not too small or too many. However sometimes the class had some problems regarding lectures’ control over the students especially for those with inappropriate attitudes by making noise during class section. How about me? He he he he he he he certainly I gave my 70% attention because waking up early in the morning makes me sleepy but I still respect the class by not making noise.
Honestly the class was great. I can see Mr radzi and Miss Helena teaching very passionately in order to make their teachings clear. At the end of class, we were shown a few videos by Miss Helena. And I was interested about the presentation in video entitled “Did You Know”. It was very creative and full of information. When I went back to my home, I have something to do. I must lean how to create a blog as assignment purpose.
Thank You.
Week 3
Today is 9.3.2009- a holiday, we don’t have MLC class today. So there’s nothing to talk about class. But the topic for blog assignment is still posted as usual in MMLS- about Stereotype. What is media stereotype, that question popped in my mind once I read the topic. After a few research things got clear. Then I found out that Media Stereotype happens in daily life, until sometimes we cannot differentiate whether it was true or false. Because stereotype had become the root inside people’s mind. For me stereotype can bring good or bad. But mostly it causes negative effects because it brings a false message.
Thank You

From your personal experience, what other media stereotype (besides the example from the article) you have seen either on TV or in the movies?
Media Stereotype – is something that has become the root inside people’s minds and they believe on it. This belief (stereotypes) has come from their observation from their surrounding environment and of course with major influences of media forms like newspaper, television, internet, radio. Media in a way to entertain people has also put their ideology in order to control, educate people’s mind, thinking and belief. Stereotype usually points to a whole class or group. Example like people who work at office is wealthier and established than fisherman.
About Media Stereotype
From my personal experience, I have seen it on one television commercial break a year ago. Unfortunately it was very hard to find it back even when I searched for the Youtube video using Google. Maybe it’s because I don’t remember what the actual name of the client of that TV advertisement.
It started when one beautiful and slim girl entering an elevator. There was already a fat girl inside the elevator. Suddenly without noticing, the slim girl accidentally farts inside the elevator. As a result, the elevator was all smelly with ‘gas’, and the slim girl was embarrassed and the fat girl covered her nose.
After that a few handsome guys entered the elevator. Once they are inside, they realized the elevator smelled unpleasant. Then without a word all the guys stared at the innocent fat girl. It looked like they were suspecting the fat girl for the awful smell. Then this TV promo ends with “Go to fitness XXXXXXXXXX, for get your better perception” (er something that sounded like that because I can’t really remember). Finally it became worse when the slim girl also covered her nose (pretending to not know anything about it). Ha ha ha ha ha ….. Poor fat girl.
Although it was a funny TV promo, it shows the real people’s perception towards people with obesity. Fat people- like to eat, lazy, smelly, not pretty/ handsome, loser etc.
For me this stereotype should be changed because everybody deserves an equal chance to live happily without prejudice of community.
Thank you

Do you often take what is on the internet as truth without thinking to much about it? If yes why? If no Why?
From my confident perspective, the authenticity level of the materials taken from the Internet, I usually would stand at the middle point. 50 per cent suggests that I don’t believe and another 50 per cent suggests I believe, depending on where the source of the news comes either from individual (personal web, blog, email) or from a trusted registered source. (example newspaper web pages like www.utusan.com.my, www.cnn.com )
When news come from an unfamiliar source from the Internet like personal web pages, personal blogs, e-mail etc I usually would not put 100 per cent to believe it because we don’t know the authenticity of the author. Everybody can use other person’s identity in order to convince the reader to believe it. For me it happened because no tight enforcement from the authority from preventing false news from being published on the Internet. So everybody can write what they want using a fake identity. For example you can create your own blog or e-mail by using false identity (name, address, country, race) with ease so that no one would know the creator of the blog or website.

Social Media
After finished watching the video titled Social Media, now I become clearer and understand what social media and its purpose in real advertising. Thanks to a very interesting and interactive information video. Without us knowing the visual really makes and helps presentation becomes clear. However I don’t want to talk about the creativity of multimedia presentation but about contents of the video – Social Media.
Back from main idea, as mentioned in video “…… social media is to create and communicate with people who care…..”. For that I like to relate a sample situation and statement from the video “…..social ice-cream by people for people …..” So it sounds like producing a product that really approaches the consumer heart and needs. It is pretty amazing if we can create products that can satisfy everyone (not all but almost). But how to achieve it?.... The solution is by using social media items like blog, e-mail, internet forum, internet messaging and video sharing. These social network really help consumers or users to express their feelings, comments, suggestions and critique about the products. From that the company can take advantages from that by improving their product.
Same things also happened to me. As a teenager I like to buy and collect t-shirt that have funky and cool design that represent tastes of youngsters. I can be categorized as a loyal fan of a few t-shirt branding company. One of that is Radioactive Clothing, a local company from KL. Their design always impress my self and they used a good fabric.
How I became a loyal member is because this company listens to the costumer’s taste and needs. Members can give comments and suggestions about the next coming products. Besides that the company always organize a design competition for the next coming products. Sometimes the comments will be responded to quickly and will take action. So it is clear that this company wants to create people products to people by using social media medium like website, internet forum and e-mail. Honestly I really like this method because it feels (consumers) like I was one a part of the company or me owning the company.
In my daily life I would prefer to use yahoo messenger as my official social media items. From that I can chat with my friends. Sometimes we make discussion via YM to talk with more friends. Beside that YM is useful because we can send files through it. So no matter how far my friends were, as long as they have internet and computer communication would not be a problem.
