Media Stereotype
Media Stereotype – is something that has become the root inside people’s minds and they believe on it. This belief (stereotypes) has come from their observation from their surrounding environment and of course with major influences of media forms like newspaper, television, internet, radio. Media in a way to entertain people has also put their ideology in order to control, educate people’s mind, thinking and belief. Stereotype usually points to a whole class or group. Example like people who work at office is wealthier and established than fisherman.
About Media Stereotype
From my personal experience, I have seen it on one television commercial break a year ago. Unfortunately it was very hard to find it back even when I searched for the Youtube video using Google. Maybe it’s because I don’t remember what the actual name of the client of that TV advertisement.
It started when one beautiful and slim girl entering an elevator. There was already a fat girl inside the elevator. Suddenly without noticing, the slim girl accidentally farts inside the elevator. As a result, the elevator was all smelly with ‘gas’, and the slim girl was embarrassed and the fat girl covered her nose.
After that a few handsome guys entered the elevator. Once they are inside, they realized the elevator smelled unpleasant. Then without a word all the guys stared at the innocent fat girl. It looked like they were suspecting the fat girl for the awful smell. Then this TV promo ends with “Go to fitness XXXXXXXXXX, for get your better perception” (er something that sounded like that because I can’t really remember). Finally it became worse when the slim girl also covered her nose (pretending to not know anything about it). Ha ha ha ha ha ….. Poor fat girl.
Although it was a funny TV promo, it shows the real people’s perception towards people with obesity. Fat people- like to eat, lazy, smelly, not pretty/ handsome, loser etc.
For me this stereotype should be changed because everybody deserves an equal chance to live happily without prejudice of community.
Thank you
Peace Live With Harmony Together
